This first assignment of the healthcare leadership MSc asks Irish health service staff to critically analyse three leadership theories or concepts, apply them to individual, team and organisational practice in their own part of the system, recommend practical improvements for patients and service users, and finish with a reflection on their own leadership.
Assignment Brief
Submit one assignment of approximately 3,000 words in which you critically assess and analyse key approaches to individual, team and organisational leadership as they apply to delivering better care and outcomes for both patients and service users, and reflect upon your own leadership practice and how it can be developed.
- Drawing on the material examined in Module 1, Part 1, critically assess and analyse at least three key theories or concepts of leadership.
- Identify opportunities to apply these theories to better understand your own and others’ leadership practice at an individual, team and organisational level. Focus primarily on three key theories or concepts, though others may be mentioned in support.
- Identify areas where applying these theories could improve the patient or service user experience in the part of the system with which you are most familiar.
- Staff in non-patient-facing roles should draw the link between their leadership practices and improvements in their area to the ultimate goal of the health service: delivering compassionate patient and service user care.
- Develop implementable recommendations to bring about improvements in your part of the service through improved leadership practices.
- Conclude with a reflection of at least 500 words on your own leadership practice and how it can be developed (included in the 3,000-word total).
All aspects of the brief should be covered in the main body of the assignment. Guidance on format and presentation is in the Programme Handbook.

With 40 marks for insights and research, this assignment rewards depth over breadth. Choose three theories that genuinely work together, for example compassionate leadership, situational or authentic leadership and a team or systems model such as collective leadership, and test each one against real evidence from Irish healthcare, such as the HSE Health Services People Strategy, Sláintecare reforms or patient experience survey findings. Then turn the analysis into two or three concrete recommendations for your own ward, department or service, and keep the 500-word reflection honest, using a model like Gibbs or Driscoll.
