Forecasting and Scheduling Assignment 2026: Lawnmower Level Plan, Chase Plan and Supply Chain Capacity, UL Kemmy Business School

Module Area Operations and Supply Chain Management: Forecasting and Scheduling
Institution Kemmy Business School (KBS), University of Limerick
Assessment Assignment, Parts (a), (b) and (c)
Weighting (a) 5% | (b) 15% | (c) 20%
Word Count (a) none | (b) 500 words | (c) about 1,200 words
Submission 1 November 2026 via Brightspace

This KBS assignment moves from calculation to strategy. Learners first build a level production plan for a lawnmower maker with highly seasonal demand and size the warehouse it needs, then build a chase plan and test it against a 10% overtime limit, and finally discuss how demand and capacity are balanced across a whole supply chain.

Scenario

A lawnmower manufacturer has a demand forecast for the next 12 months as shown in the table below. The current workforce of 100 staff can produce 1,500 lawnmowers per month. Lawnmowers must be stored at ground level and need space of 2 metres x 1.5 metres each.

Month Demand forecast (mowers/month)
January 600
February 800
March 1,000
April 1,500
May 2,000
June 1,700
July 1,200
August 1,100
September 900
October 2,500
November 3,200
December 900

Part (a) – Level Production Plan (5%, no word count)

Prepare a production plan that keeps the output level and fully utilises the workforce. What is the maximum warehouse space required under this plan?

Part (b) – Demand Chase Plan (15%, 500 words)

Prepare a demand chase plan. What implications would this have for staffing levels, assuming that the maximum amount of overtime would result in production levels of only 10% higher than for normal hours? Comment on the feasibility of implementing your plan.

Part (c) – Demand and Capacity across the Supply Chain (20%, indicative 1,200 words)

Using either your own organisation, an organisation with which you are familiar, or the lawnmower manufacturer from Parts A and B, discuss how demand and capacity are managed across the wider supply chain, addressing:

  • challenges associated with balancing capacity and demand
  • demand variability and forecasting issues
  • impacts on suppliers, manufacturers and customers
  • risks associated with poor coordination

Include and evaluate strategies to improve supply chain effectiveness, providing practical examples.

Total demand is 17,400 mowers, so the level plan works out at 1,450 a month against a workforce that can make 1,500, and that gap should be discussed rather than ignored. Build a month-by-month table of production, demand and closing stock, find the peak stock, and convert it to floor space at 3 m² per mower. In the chase plan, show where overtime capped at 10% cannot cover the October and November peaks and what that means for hiring, layoffs and cost. Part (c) carries the most weight, so link capacity tactics such as the bullwhip effect, information sharing and flexible suppliers to real examples.
