Task Week 6: 500-word critical paper on the Traveller Mediation Service
Weighting 5%
Due 2 November 2026, 1pm

In this UL Week 6 task, students pick one of three questions and use conflict theory to analyse the Traveller Mediation Service: its legitimacy problem, the paradox of a peer-led service paid for by the state, or the over-policing and under-protection of Travellers shown in the Access to Justice report.

Task

Using conflict theory, critically examine the work of The Traveller Mediation Service (TMS) and answer one of these questions:

  1. What is the state’s role in addressing conflict if the state institution has no social legitimacy? Discuss the state’s role in addressing conflict and how it responds to tension.
  2. The TMS is peer-led yet state funded. Discuss how this creates a conflict theory paradox, and how the funding may compromise its neutrality or co-opt it into the state’s policing work.
  3. Using specific data from the Irish Travellers’ Access to Justice report, discuss how Travellers are over-policed as suspects and under-policed as victims.

Readings: TMS Peer Mediation Evaluation Report (2019), Mediating Change executive summary, A Review of the TMS (2025), the TMS Peer Mediation in Prisons overview (2020) and related articles.

The paper should be argumentative rather than descriptive: take a position, support it with empirical and theoretical literature and give credit to contradictory evidence. Academic books, chapters and journals come first; internet sources only supplement them and must be credible.

Presentation and Submission Rules

  • 500 words maximum; anything over the limit is not corrected.
  • 1.5 or double line spacing, justified, Times New Roman 12; headings recommended.
  • No Wikipedia, online dictionaries or ChatGPT-type tools as sources.
  • Harvard referencing (UL library Cite it Rite) with a full bibliography.
  • Submit through the SO6041 Brightspace course site with the signed plagiarism declaration cover page; late work loses 5 percentage points on day one and gets zero after 24 hours.

Choose one question early and state your position in the first lines. Name the strand of conflict theory you use, apply it to one or two concrete findings from the TMS reports or the Access to Justice data, and keep description of the readings short so the 500 words go on analysis.
